What is EDVAC?

DVAC stands for Electronic Discrete Variable Automatic Computer. It was one of the earliest electronic computers and was designed to overcome some limitations of its predecessor, ENIAC.

ЁЯФН What is EDVAC?

  • Full Form: Electronic Discrete Variable Automatic Computer

  • Developed By: J. Presper Eckert and John Mauchly

  • Development Started: 1944

  • Completed: Around 1949

  • Type: Binary, stored-program computer

  • Memory: Mercury delay line memory

  • Location: University of Pennsylvania

  • Purpose: General-purpose computing (especially military and scientific use)

ЁЯза Key Features of EDVAC

  1. Stored Program Concept:

    • Unlike ENIAC, EDVAC was one of the first computers to implement the stored-program concept (suggested by John von Neumann).

    • This means that instructions and data were both stored in memory, enabling the machine to be reprogrammed easily.

  2. Binary System:

    • Used binary number system instead of decimal like ENIAC.

    • Binary is more efficient for electronic computers.

  3. Serial Processing:

    • Processed instructions and data in a serial fashion (one at a time), reducing complexity in circuits.

  4. Memory:

    • Used mercury delay line memory, a form of serial-access memory.

  5. Improved Efficiency:

    • Faster, more reliable, and more flexible than ENIAC.

ЁЯПЧя╕П Major Components of EDVAC

Component Function
Input Unit Receives data and instructions (usually via punched tapes).
Central Control Unit Directs operations and sequence of instructions.
Arithmetic Unit Performs calculations using binary arithmetic.
Memory Unit Stores both data and program (using delay lines).
Output Unit Displays or prints results.

тЪЦя╕П Advantages of EDVAC

  • Introduced the stored program architecture, which is now standard.

  • Used binary system, simplifying hardware.

  • More flexible and easier to reprogram.

  • Faster and more reliable than earlier computers.

ЁЯЫая╕П Disadvantages of EDVAC

  • Still large and power-hungry compared to modern systems.

  • Used mercury delay lines, which were complex and not very durable.

  • Limited memory and speed by todayтАЩs standards.
